The Ecomuseum with Aquarium – Ruse was opened on September 28, 2014, as a continuation of the long-standing natural science tradition in the city, which began back in 1889 with the first specimens for the natural history cabinet at the State Real Gymnasium. Over the decades, the collections expanded — passing through the school natural science museum and the “Nature” department of the Regional Historical Museum — until they found their modern home in today’s Ecomuseum with Aquarium.
The exhibition is arranged on four levels with a total area of over 2,000 m² and presents natural processes, species, and specific habitats characteristic of the Lower Danube region.
What you will discover in the museum
Wetland ecosystem – a reconstruction of the Danube wetlands with characteristic birds, vegetation, and scenes from traditional livelihoods.
Paleontology – impressive fossils of mammoths and mastodons, including the world’s only known jaw of Mammuthus rumanus.
Interactive zone – models, digital installations, and engaging activities for children and adults.
Aquariums – the largest freshwater aquarium in Bulgaria with 65 tons of water and diverse Danube fish, including rare sturgeon species.
Terrariums – a collection of live reptiles such as boas, iguanas, and turtles.
Collections and archives – natural science materials revealing the development of scientific research in the region.
Interesting facts and legends
The museum owns a unique find unmatched anywhere in the world — the jaw of the earliest European mammoth, Mammuthus rumanus.
The aquarium is one of a kind in Bulgaria, dedicated entirely to freshwater Danube species.
The Ecomuseum is among the most visited scientific and educational sites in the region thanks to its combination of science, living nature, and modern presentation.
