Orlova Chuka Cave
Оrlova Chuka Cave is located in the municipality of Dve Mogili, near the village of Pepelina, about 40–45 km from the city of Ruse.
With its approximately 13,437 meters of galleries, it is the second-longest cave in Bulgaria — after Duhlata.
The cave was discovered in 1941, and it was developed and opened for tourist visits during the 1950s and 1960s.
What You Will Discover in Orlova Chuka Cave
A significant part of the interior has been developed with lighting, comfortable paths, and stairs (124 stone steps), which makes the cave accessible for visitors.
Among the main attractions are the Concert Hall, the Great Stalactite (approx. 3.5 m high), galleries with fantastic stalactites, stalagmites, and sinter formations, as well as the “Great Screes” — the largest hall featuring impressive cave structures.
The cave is home to over 10,000 bats of various species — including protected ones, making it an important natural refuge.
Archaeological research has shown that the cave was inhabited in the past — traces of prehistoric humans have been discovered, as well as remains of cave bears.
Interesting Facts and Legends
The name “Orlova Chuka” comes from the rocky crown above the entrance — according to legend, it once served as a refuge for eagles.
The hall with the best acoustics is called the “Concert Hall” — over the years, concerts and cultural events have been held there, taking advantage of the cave’s unique resonance.
In the past, many of the stalactites and stalagmites were given imaginative names such as “The Dinosaur,” “The Owl,” “The Turtle,” and others because of their shapes — visitors still enjoy trying to spot these “living” figures in the rock.
Orlova Chuka offers a unique underground experience — with impressive cave formations, unusual acoustics, and an atmosphere that combines nature, history, and mystery.
It is the largest and most accessible cave in Northeastern Bulgaria, easily reachable from Ruse and suitable for nature lovers, speleology enthusiasts, and family visits alike.
A trip to the cave can be combined with a walk through the Rusenski Lom Nature Park and nearby natural and historical attractions — for a complete experience of the region.
