HISTORY

Lipnik Forest Park, also known as Teketo, is located about 12 km east of Ruse and is one of the most emblematic recreational areas in the region. The park’s history begins in the early 20th century, when the area around the lakes was turned into a hunting and leisure zone for Ruse’s industrialists and citizens. The name “Teketo” comes from an old Muslim spiritual retreat nearby, which sheltered dervishes and hermits.

During socialism, in the 1960s–1980s, the area was extensively developed — lakes with paddle boats were created, summer restaurants, camping areas, Hotel “Rai,” and an open-air concert stage. At that time, it became an established and beloved weekend destination for the people of Ruse. After the political changes, the park fell into partial neglect, but in recent years it has been revived thanks to local initiatives and European projects. Today, Lipnik combines tranquility, nature, and opportunities for active recreation.
